My Weekend of Paddling

I set out on Saturday to do my usual paddling workout, and didn’t realize the condition of my local flat water until I got there.

Brown, muddy water with lots of debris.

But I got out there in my Steller SEL surfski and paddled into high wind with very choppy water–which was great because I need to paddle in those conditions more often to build my skills. But after 2 miles of wind and pollen in my face, I decided to turn back.

The next day, today, I re-connected with #PaddlingFriendSarah for a great run on the river below the dam.

We watched the gauges overnight to make sure the river was at a safe level and decided to wait until 2pm this afternoon to hit the water to allow it enough time to drop even more to make sure, and I was thrilled as we were paddling and realized that we hit it at just about a perfect level.

It was great paddling with one of my most favorite paddling friends again.

We now just need some forward-thinking bartender to invent some drink called, “Sex on a Muddy River Bank.”

Most times I go kayaking I wear a bodycam, but for some reason I did not today. Gosh, I wish I would have worn it so I could share the whole adventure with you. From climbing up a 15′ log jam to inspect a crushed kayak, to sex on a river bank, to baby fawn in peril, and a goose hissing at me. It would have been epic.
