Ken Whiting put together such a valuable video about river kayaking, I think it should be shared as widely as possible.
I would also add that having a good survival bag outfitted for kayaking can be a life saver.
And here is some race video of mine from a year ago that shows the danger sweepers and strainers present. The real danger is being thrown out of your boat, at or under the water level, and getting caught in branches from which you cannot escape. Fortunately, that did not happen during this race and there were plenty of experienced paddlers nearby to help if there would have been a serious situation.
